Edmund Capon, director of the Art Gallery of NSW, and Andrew Sayers, director of the National Portrait Gallery, headline a panel including artists Cherry Hood and Paul Newton (both finalists in this year’s Archibald Prize) and others. Moderated by Virginia Trioli, the panel will represent different points of view: the artist, the curator, the critic and the portrait sitter.
It is no surprise that the Archibald Prize for portraiture is Australia’s most popular annual art event. Portraiture has always engaged and intrigued viewers, occupying a prominent and unique position in Western art, politics and public life. So what exactly constitutes a portrait in 2010? How does portraiture shape, or reflect, national identity? And does it still hold a significant place in art and in the community?
